Modak is one of the most beloved traditional sweets in India, especially during the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi. This festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, and Modak is offered to the deity as a sacred prasad. The sweet dumpling has a delicate outer layer made from rice flour and a rich filling of coconut and jaggery flavoured with cardamom.
The shape of Modak is unique and resembles a small dumpling with pleated edges and a pointed top. Traditionally, Modak’s are steamed, making them soft, healthy, and aromatic. In many Indian households, families prepare Modak together during the festival, turning the cooking process into a joyful cultural tradition.
Besides its religious importance, Modak is also loved for its delightful taste. The combination of coconut, jaggery, and cardamom creates a warm and sweet flavour that melts in your mouth. Today, many variations of Modak are also popular, including fried Modak, chocolate Modak, and dry fruit Modak.
